OPERATIONS MANUALS
AN OPERATIONS MANUAL is the day-to-day document that is used in Part 135 operations and spells out the procedures for these operations. It is a required for all but the smallest of Single Pilot and Single Pilot in Command Operations. This document provides both pilots and management the day-to day information that is needed, and required Part 135 regulations, to run flight and ground operations.
The required contents of the Operations Manual is spelled out in the Part 135 regulations. Additionally, there are other needed items that make operations flow better and are included in your document. This document, more than any other, allows your FAA inspector to add materials that he/she thinks should be included. I call these "hot buttons". I include the FAA "hot buttons" in your document to speed up acceptance of this document.
I believe in writing the manual to meet the requirements. I don't normally include a lot of what I call hand holding items. Remember, once accepted, the document becomes regulatory in nature. In other words the FAA can bust you on an Operations Manual violation just as they can a regulations violation. So I truly believe in the simple approach to this document. What does an Operations Manual look like?
As I am sure that you are aware of, the FAA is often unpredictable. I promise you that they will want some changes in the manual. I will produce all the changes and updates that the FAA requires. I will stand by the product, with the necessary changes, through initial approval by the FAA.
